Biosphere

In this section you'll need to know:

  1. What a soil catena is.
  2. How Brown Earth soils are formed.
  3. How Podsol soils are formed.
  4. How Gley soils are formed.
  5. How Psammosere dune formation operates.

Podsol soils

Watch this revision clip to revise Podsol formation. Take special care to fully expand on points relating to leaching and waterlogging in this soil type.

Listen to the 2 minute RevisionBlast and then bulet point the main features from memory.

Brown Earths

This video clip will demonstrate how to explain the formation of a brown earth soil using a diagram. Keep your diagram simple; draw the 'ladder' structure, add a tree with long roots, some worms in horizon A, blur the horizon between A and B and add broken up bedrock in horizon C. Add an iron pan if you can explain the conditions that might lead to it being there.

Listen to the 2 minute RevisionBlast and then try to mind map the main features from memory.

Gley Soils

Watch this clip to revise how Gley soils form. Refer to your notes to get a better understanding of the process of 'gleying'. Consider how you are going lay out your answer, the diagram takes up space so be prepared to use a whole new page in your answer booklet.

Listen to the 2 minute RevisionBlast and then try to rewrite a model answer from memory.
